Mrs Loiseau told students at Paris’ Sciences Po university: “We are at one of those pivotal moments in the history of European construction, which finds itself at a crossroads. [The European project] could collapse.

“It is a construction which isn’t over … [Europe’s future] has not been written in advance.” France’s young President Emmanuel Macron is pushing the concept of more Europe and more integration, but his plans are being stalled by the rising tide of euroscepticism sweeping western democracies.
